Overview

Founded in 1936 by Dr. Gregorio T. Singan, the PCS is a non-stock, non-profit organization headquartered in its own building in Quezon City with more than 2,000 Fellows spread out in 11 Chapters all over the country, and with 19 affiliated surgical specialty societies.

Continuing Education, Training and Scholarship

  • The PCS conducts numerous conferences, seminars, and post-graduate courses throughout the country. We also hold an Annual clinical Congress and Midyear Convention that focus on themes and learning issues relevant to all surgical specialists. We aim to be the leading scientific congress in the region. A primary care surgery program is being conducted to enhance the competencies of our family physician colleagues.

  • The PCS offers a Scholarship Program for deserving surgical residents in accredited training programs nationwide. This scholarship is open to all surgical specialties.

  • A National Surgical Manpower study is being conducted to generate accurate data on the number and distribution of surgeons in the country. A joint Accreditation Council has been established to address multispecialty concerns regarding accreditation of training programs in different surgical specialties.

PCS Programs

Research and Publication

  • The PCS conducts regular courses on research methodology and critical appraisal. We actively formulate evidence-based clinical practice guidelines on common surgical conditions to guide practitioners in all specialties. Research fora and competitions are regularly held to promote research development.

  • The PCS quarterly journal, the Philippine Journal of Surgical Specialties (PJSS) contains scientific articles from all surgical specialties and aims to be the first med-line indexed surgical journal in the country. The PJSS now has a panel of international peer reviewers.

  • The PCS also publishes a regular newsletter and maintains a website to disseminate pertinent information on College activities to members and interested parties.

Health Legislation and Advocacy

  • The PCS thru its Legislative Liaison committee aims to be a potent lobby force to influence legislation affecting surgeons, like the HMO Bill, the Medical Malpractice Act, Amendment to the Medical Act of 2959, etc.

  • The PCS also advocates health promotive programs like the use of seatbelts, anti-smoking campaign and environmental protection with the adoption of a1-hectare reforestation area in the La Mesa Dam Watershed.

Upliftting Welfare of Fellows

  • The Fellows Assistance Plan (FAP) provides families of deceased Fellows a generous assistance for an annual contribution of only P500.

  • The PCS has successfully negotiated and will continue to dialogue with the HMO’s and the PHIC to ensure maximum benefit for certified surgical specialists and for our patients’ right to choose their surgeons and quality surgical care.

  • Legal advice is provided by the PCS for all Fellows who face possible litigation.

Special Programs

Cancer

The PCS is one of the leading organizations involved in the national cancer control program. We publish a Cancer Bulletin which features guidelines on treatment of various cancer sites. We extend assistance to hospitals in forming tumors boards and implementing the tumor registry.

Trauma

The PCS is also a leading participant in the country’s injury prevention program. Trauma treatment guidelines have been published and will be updated. A Trauma Injury Registry and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) programs involving all surgical specialties will be implemented.

Surgical Infection

The PCS together with other organizations initiated and continues to implement the National Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program and disseminates evidence-based guidelines on antibiotic prophylaxis and utilization in common surgical procedures.

Surgery in Undeserved Regions for Education

The PCS SURE program provides continuing education to Doctors who practice in underserved regions thru wet clinics and didactic sessions.

Advantages of PCS Fellow

  • PCS Fellows enjoy a unique national Fellowship and the prestige and respect from more than 65 years of worthwhile and helpful activity.

  • The PCS shall be the voice of all surgeons in national policy making and advocacy on important health and economic issues. Invariably, policies and public opinion can be more strongly influenced by a united umbrella organization representing a broad base of surgical specialists.

  • The PCS provides a national, regional and global network of contacts and opportunities for professional growth for surgeons in all specialties.

  • Surgeons in whatever specialty shall continue to face common economic, political and social issues affecting surgical services and patient care. Uniting behind a strong PCS will better assure survival of our specialties in the increasingly competitive global arena.
